Returning to Your Home
Returning home after an evacuation can bring relief, but hazards may still be present. Follow official re-entry instructions, move carefully, and use the contact numbers provided by emergency officials when questions arise.
Questions or concerns
Contact the GPREP Call Centre at 780-830-5002 during operating hours if you need help understanding local re-entry guidance.
Important safety reminders
- Do not drive over hoses, barricades, or emergency equipment
- Follow all directions from first responders and local authorities
- Expect heavy equipment and emergency operations to remain active in the area
- Keep children and pets away from damaged areas until they are safe
First steps when you return
- Check for wildlife, stray animals, and structural hazards before entering buildings
- Watch for hot spots, unstable trees, sharp debris, and contaminated water
- Be cautious around downed power lines, damaged utilities, or active gas smells
- Review local boil-water, utility, and re-entry notices before resuming normal use
Cleaning and recovery
Take photographs for insurance before discarding damaged items. Use appropriate protective equipment during wildfire or flood cleanup, and contact utility providers before restoring services if you see signs of damage.
